Aromatherapy, not just about smell.
What exactly is aromatherapy? Our Olfactory nerves have endings inside our nose and communicate with our brain about the scents we are smelling. So naturally, essential oils elicit responses based on the aroma that we are smelling. Our brain, in turn, responds by triggering hormones throughout our body eliciting responses from a sense of calm to heightened alertness, depending on the trigger.
These same oils though to not work just through our sense of smell but through absorption into our largest organ: our skin.
While not clearly understood from a scientific standpoint aromatherapy is not a newcomer on the stage of health and wellness, though it is relatively new to the United States in the last 30-40 years. By working with our bodies in complex interactions, including stimulating the brain through smell, interaction with hormones and also on a cellular level, essential oils, though the use of aromatherapy, can enhance our body’s ability to heal itself. One should always use caution when putting a pure undiluted essential oil on their skin. Always test in a small area first and research whether the oil should be diluted or not.
