What is a carrier oil?
Carrier oils are typically plant based oils that are relatively odorless and less volatile than essential oils. They are used to dilute essential oils that are too potent to be used directly on the skin. There are a variety of aromatherapy carrier oils, some of the more common ones being:
- Avocado oil
- Apricot oil
- Coconut oil
- Grape seed oil
- Jojoba oil
- Olive oil (mild)
- Sweet almond oil
- Canola (Rapeseed) oil
- Sunflower oil
- Safflower oil
The aromatherapy carrier oil is often chosen based on the area of the body they are going to be used, potential sensitivity to the oil, and viscosity. The best aromatherapy oil will depend on its use and location. See aromatherapy oils and their uses for more information on how to benefit from aromatherapy treatment.
